During the release of Snatch back in 2000, Guy Ritchie was riding the crest of a wave. Not only had he just married the Queen of Pop, he was himself being proclaimed the new king of British cinema.

Remember when CGI first invaded the multiplex, way back in those misty, innocent 1990s? Fantastic, wasn’t it? Remember how we marvelled at T2’s liquid metal shapeshifter, and trembled at the tramp of Jurassic Park’s lumbering dinosaurs?  Finally, here was a technology that allowed filmmakers to put anything, no matter how impossible, onto celluloid. A thousand Keanus bashing each other up.  Stanley Kubrick once asserted that “If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.” It was a great quote, but we never took him literally. Now, at last, his words had come true.

Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov’s ravishing take on the early life of Genghis Khan is billed as a scholarly historical epic, but the action is pure Hollywood: essentially, what we have here is a superhero origin story.

Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull can count itself among the best action adventures this side of 2000. It is a thrilling exhibition from Steven Spielberg: a grand and indulgent feast of high budget derring-do. Borrowing from its forerunners but not imitating them, it’s made archaeology cool again.
