Judi Dench's M has seldom left her office in the previous Bond movies. Spanning the Brosnan and Craig eras, she's tended to sit behind her desk making disapproving comments about 007's recklessness while eventually coming good when our man needs to be backed up. Not so in Skyfall. She is absolutely a principal character and we can even go as far as to say that the relationship between M and Bond is the most important in the film.

James Bond films are great escapist fun and always a bit tongue in cheek, but my personal favourite spy is Alec Guinness in John le Carre's Smiley TV series. No women, no stunts, no sex scenes, no gorgeous locations, but totally compulsive viewing as Guinness is such a good actor. Dry, obsessive, offhand. And the dialogue is superb Love the Bond films for all their glamour, but prefer the dark stark reality of what a real spy's life is probably like as in the Smiley series..

Not in the least interested in sci-fi. Bond movies are and have been getting over the top for a long time. Dame judi should stay well clear. She is much better than that.
