Freaky, freaky Bardem
The methods with which Javier Bardem inflicts villainy on the world aren't perhaps the most original in the script. But it's all made up for by his downright unsettling screen presence. A tortured character with a motive and a total disconnection from reality, he is very weird and very, very funny. His second villainy masterclass after No Country For Old Men, this is Bardem recognising the opportunity to have fun with his character and running with it. Simply brilliant.

James Bond films are great escapist fun and always a bit tongue in cheek, but my personal favourite spy is Alec Guinness in John le Carre's Smiley TV series. No women, no stunts, no sex scenes, no gorgeous locations, but totally compulsive viewing as Guinness is such a good actor. Dry, obsessive, offhand. And the dialogue is superb Love the Bond films for all their glamour, but prefer the dark stark reality of what a real spy's life is probably like as in the Smiley series..

Not in the least interested in sci-fi. Bond movies are and have been getting over the top for a long time. Dame judi should stay well clear. She is much better than that.
