After failed attempts by Cannon Films in the mid-eighties and an abandoned James Cameron treatment in the nineties, Spidey finally made it to the big screen in 2002 with self-proclaimed comic book fan Sam Raimi directing. The Cider House Rules actor Tobey Maguire was cast as Peter Parker, with Kirsten Dunst as his love interest Mary Jane Watson. In the film, Spider-Man did battle with Willem Dafoe's freakish Green Goblin.
