It's being called the new Twilight and reports are even saying its box office openings worldwide will rival the likes of Harry Potter. For the European premiere, held at London's O2 arena, fans screamed and flocked from around the world to meet the stars. But why the big hype? And what's it all about?
Fret not, here are at MSN Movies we've put together all the vital info you need to make you a strong contender to become a pro on The Hunger Games.
The movie is based on a trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins. The first novel, The Hunger Games, is followed by Catching Fire and the last instalment, Mockingjay.
So, meet the main character (pictured here) Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence.

Don't ever, EVER call this the new Twilight. NEVER. Twilight is **** and this book is MESMORIZING. I cannot stop reading it. On the last book. Read the first book like a hundred times.

This is so much better than the Twilight series! Amazing books, amazing movies that's what I say! The cast has been chosen amazingly and they really show the emotional side to the books. Love Josh Hutcherson who plays Peeta also love Jennifer Lawrence who plays Katniss she is amazing in her role and that's what all the other cast members apparently think!

Some of you people seem to of already judged this film before seeing it.
As a person who has read the books and enjoyed Battle Royale before i read them, i think i'm in a position to say they are not as similar as it sounds. The actual games is more like a back-drop to a bigger picture, where as in Battle Royale, it was just people killing each other.
Either way, i definitely don't think you can judge this film without seeing it, or ever even reading the book it's based on, and having immediate negativity towards it is pointless.
Nothing is ever truly original...

Did you all know that there are in fact only 7 plots, for every single film, book and comic that exists. Every product will fit into one of these 7 categories, or will be a combination of them.
The 7 plots are:-
1) ACHILLES - The flawless (or almost flawless) person, e.g. superman
2) CINDERELLA - The dream come true (e.g Dirty Dancing, Prerry Woman.)
3) CIRCE - The chase, e.g The Blues Brothers.
4) FAUST - Selling your soul to the Devil may bring riches, but eventually, you will belong to him, e.g. Wall Street
5) ORPHEUS - The loss of something personal, e.g. Regarding Henry, Farscape (think about John Crichton!)
6) ROMEO & JULIET - The love story, e.g. Sleepless In Seattle.
7) TRISTAN - X loves Y, but one or both are already spoken for, e.g. Fatal Attraction.

How on earth is The Hunger Games like Twilight? Twilight is just the plain, boring story in each book, but The Hunger Games - it's just amazing! I have only read the first book, but I got soo addicted to it - every word, sentence... The film is bound to be just as amazing!

The authors gone on record saying she hadn't even heard of battle royale. If you have read the books, you will all ready know that the film will be a huge disappointment compared to them.
What annoys me about the film is the 12a rating. Nothing in the books suggests its suitable for 12a, which is why the originally had a 15 version, but to be commercial, cut out all the offending scenes.

Pfft, please...
As much as I do enjoy Twilight, you can hardly compare the two. The only real similarities are a female protagonist, and enough fans to start an army and conquer a small country.
Twlight's monotone lead spends most of the saga debating who she should essentially go out with. The Hunger Games lead is thrust into a do or die situation and emerges not with a guy on each arm, but battered and bloody.
Just to reiterate, I enjoy Twilight just as much for what it is, but I fail to see the comparisons.

Please don't slag this off until you've read the books or seen the film - I was dubious but the books were the most amazing ones I have ever read and I'm dying to see the film adaptation.

I am genuinely sick and TIRED of hearing the same thing over and over, "Hunger Games is a rip off from Battle Royale."
Yes Battle Royale was fantastic, yes the violence and fight scenes were monumental, yes it made history as it was so controversial in its time. But no, Hunger Games isn't anything like it. Reading books by both authors people fail to see the only REAL similarity in both stories is survival of the fittest theme, children killing each other in a secluded area.
And to be honest the first Hunger Games is the only one truly anything like Battle Royale, as Alison said below me, Battle Royale invokes the overpopulation of Japan, along with the teenagers disrespect of adults.
The Hunger Games invokes the pressure and power government has over society, and is based in the post-apocalptyic america. It continue's on to become a REVOLUTION and a WAR between the government and a rebel army led by the female protagonist when leading into the second and third book. Although it may be an easy read and simply written for a teenage audience, make no mistake that The Hunger Games is a fantastic gripping and thought provoking story line.

The subject matter does not interest me the more comments I read the less I wan't to watch . So many film adaptations disappoint if you have read the book first . I possess a large library of real books in bookcases on subjects that interest me .This film does not . Am I abnormal ?

Why are people saying this is a rip off, nearly every film is a rip off another idea, doesn't make the idea rubbish, just gives it a new spin. I have read all the hunger game books and loved them. Never watched Battle Royale but after everyone saying how amazing they are I will be watching them.
The Twilight comment I think actually brings the film down, Hunger games is much better than Twilight. Katniss is a great character and not a one dimensional boring Character like Bella, and this is coming from an old fan of the Twilight series.
Don't judge a book, just because it may have similar themes to another film. If you keep on doing that you'll quickly run out of films to watch.

If you want to talk about ripping off other plots. This, like Battle Royale, borrows a lot of its story from William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
