It's not just the new Prometheus trailer. It's the best movie trailer of the century!

Watch and be amazed! We think the new trailer for Prometheus is an all-time great.

Once in a while a movie trailer comes along that makes you a bit trembly, knowing you're in for a truly exciting cinematic experience. And then there's the new, full theatrical Prometheus trailer, possibly the best movie trailer of the century, that will have you quivering with ancitipation for the new sci-fi project set before the time of the great Alien. If you hadn't already inked June 1 into your diary, you will now...

"A king has his reign... then he dies. It's inevitable," breathes Charlize Theron (Meredith) as the scene is set for an epic journey into the dark corners of the universe, courtesy of Sir Ridley Scott. "Prometheus has landed," comes the commanding announcement amid glimpses of the majestic spaceship. Drums beat. Shiver.

Prometheus: What We Know

Now it's time for some juicy plot details. Shots of a lecture in which mysterious recurring pictograms are revealed throughout ancient civilizations. "I think they want us to come here and find them," says Noomi Rapace (Dr Elizabeth Shaw) tantalisingly. Yes! Go find them! Go find the genesis of the human race!

More ominous drums beat. "Prometheus, are you seeing this?" asks Rapace as she shines a torch up into the face of huge humanoid statues - or are they statues? Idris Elba (Janek) announces that the probe has detected - you guessed it - lifeforms. And where, pray tell, are they heading? "Earth" comes the chilling reply from Mr Michael Fassbender (David the android), placing fear into the hearts of the Prometheus crew and sheer joy into the rapt audience (yes that's us).

"Take us home" begs Charlize Theron, who by the way is looking rather stylish in a sleek grey spacesuit that looks like it came from Prada. Not to be outdone, Noomi appears in a couple of bandages a la Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element although she doesn't look very happy about it. Meanwhile, intriguing images flash onto the screen while a siren wails ominously: there's the space jockey whose discovery kicked off the whole Alien shebang, an exploding space ship, Idris Elba looking very scared, Charlize Theron in a pod, guys in space suits wielding weapons, Noomi Rapace looking even more scared...

And yes, we're putting it ahead of that unforgettable 'Creep' trailer for The Social Network, the stunning full trailer for Sin City and those sumptuous teasers for The Dark Knight back in 2008.

"Big things have small beginnings," warns Michael Fassbender (although anyone who's seen Shame will know that's not strictly true). But heck, this trailer is just about the biggest we've ever seen: full of the promise of epic scenes, exciting concepts, jaw-on-the-floor action, a punchy script and a bang-on cast. Bring on Prometheus - we're counting the days. We've said before that there should be an Oscar for best trailer. This is a shoe-in.
