Cruise reigns in Magnificent Seven?

Tom Cruise is rumoured to be attached to a remake of The Magnificent Seven.

The Mission: Impossible star is thought to be considering a lead role in the new version of John Sturges' 1960 Western, reported Variety.

Sources have said that while the Hollywood superstar has been interested in saddling up for a Magnificent Seven reboot, the project is "still a long way off and is not in Tom's immediate plans".

No director or writer is attached yet, and the planned adaptation is still in early stages.

Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz starred as a group of American gunmen hired to protect a small Mexican village from a group of bandits in The Magnificent Seven - a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic Seven Samurai.

The film spawned three sequels, and a TV series in 1998-2000.

Tom, who made an uncredited cameo in Young Guns, has harboured a dream to make a Western for a while as he was previously attached to 3:10 To Yuma, while Far And Away, in which he starred alongside then wife Nicole Kidman, featured elements of a Western.

His next big-screen outing will be as bad boy Stacee Jaxx in Rock Of Ages alongside Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, action thriller One Shot and sci-fi adventure Oblivion.
