Michael Keaton has signed up to direct new father/daughter comedy drama Buttercup.

The Batman star - who has recently been cast as the villain in the new RoboCop movie - has stepped into the director's chair after Whale Rider's Niki Caro left the project, Variety reports.

The indie movie, written by Alice O'Neil, tells the story of a woman who is forced to assume responsibility for her elderly father after he is arrested for drunk driving.

Brought together in these unfortunate circumstances the daughter - nicknamed Buttercup by her dad - learns to accept her father's faults, which helps her to finally trust the other men in her life.

Keaton, 61, directed The Merry Gentleman in 2008, in which he co-starred with Kelly Macdonald, stepping in to direct when writer-director Ron Lazzeretti fell ill.

Jennifer Aniston and Alan Arkin were previously attached to star in Buttercup, but are no longer involved.

The project is currently casting, and it is not known if Keaton will star as the father himself.
