Michael Pitt has signed up to star in The First, a biopic of Canadian Hollywood star Mary Pickford.
The Boardwalk Empire star will play Owen Moore, Mary's first husband, Deadline reports.
Mary, dubbed 'The girl with the curls', was one of the early Canadian pioneers in Hollywood and went on to become a screen legend, founding the United Artists studio with stars including Charlie Chaplin. She was also one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Mary and Owen had a troubled marriage, blighted by Owen's alcoholism and his insecurity about living in her shadow, and it is believed there were bouts of domestic violence.
Young actress Ryan Simpkins, who has appeared in award-winning films A Single Man, Revolutionary Road and Sherrybaby, has been cast to play the young Mary, and Broadway actress Lily Rabe will play her in her youth.
The film, due to begin shooting next year, will focus on Mary as a woman rising to power in a male-dominated industry.
