Carey Mulligan could be starring in the upcoming adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic Far From The Madding Crowd.

Producers are said to be keen for the An Education actress to take the lead role of Bathsheba Everdene in the movie, which is set to be reworked for the big screen by British author David Nicholls.

Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterburg, best known for his films The Celebration and The Hunt, is in talks to direct, according to The Wrap.

Hardy's fourth novel, first published in 1874, follows Bathsheba and her love interests - shepherd Gabriel Oak, soldier Sergeant Troy and farm owner William Boldwood.

Carey has completed filming on Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which has had its release delayed until summer 2013.
