Avengers Assemble stars Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson are to be reunited on the Broadway stage.

The stars - who play Black Widow and Hawkeye in the comic book blockbuster - will be husband and wife in the revival of Tennessee Williams' classic play Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Scarlett told Variety: "I'm close to making a deal on it. I can not wait absolutely to get to it. I'm exhilarated, I'm terrified, but I think in a good way."

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof tells the story of Mississippi couple Brick and Maggie as they gather to celebrate the birthday of Brick's father Big Daddy Pollitt, the biggest cotton-plantation owner in the delta. The celebrations uncover many repressed feelings within the family.

The play first opened on Broadway in 1955, starring Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie and Ben Gazzara as Brick, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The play was adapted into the classic film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman in 1958.

The show has been revived on Broadway four times, most recently in 2003 starring Ashley Judd and Jason Patric, and an all African-America production in 2008 starring James Earl Jones and Terrence Howard.

Scarlett won a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in A View From The Bridge in 2010.
